A woman looking at a star fish at the Key West Aquarium. No matter where you turn, there is some type of attraction to explore on your Key West adventure. Found only steps from Duval Street, NYAH, or Not Your Average Hotel, puts you within walking distance of some of the most popular places on the Florida island. One such spot is the Key West Aquarium, which allows visitors to learn about the colorful aquatic world.

The History of the Aquarium

This Key West attraction is the brainchild of Dr. Van Deusen, who at the time was the director of the Fairmount Park Aquarium in Philadelphia. Work started in 1933, and it opened to the public in February 1935. The aquarium leased its space to the U.S. Government in 1943, but the building was returned to the city in 1946. The building has overgrown renovations over the years, and today is one of the top attractions on the island.

What Creatures Call It Home

Visiting the aquarium is an excellent way to experience the underwater world without having to step foot in the water. The tanks are home to all sorts of Florida wildlife, like turtles, stingrays, sharks, and other tropical creatures.

Several presentations are scheduled daily, giving you a chance to get an up-close look at some of these animals. These events include:

  • Sea turtle conservation tour
  • Invasive species tour
  • Atlantic shores gamefish tour and feeding
  • Florida Keys ecosystem presentation
  • Sharks feeding and conservation tour

Another popular part of the attraction is the touch tank. Filled with conchs, horseshoe and giant hermit crabs, urchins, sea cucumbers, and sea stars, this area teaches you about some of the smallest residents of the aquarium.
