What to Do When Visiting the Park

Found on the southern end of Key West, Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is part natural attraction, part historical landmark. The park’s focal point is Fort Taylor, which predates the Civil War. The National Historic Monument is home to the world’s largest collection of Civil War armament. Learn about the fort’s history by checking out the interpretive panels or talking to a tour guide. There are even historic demonstrations on the third weekend of the month.

There’s so much more to do when visiting the Key West park than expanding your trivia knowledge.

  • Bring your binoculars to see what birds you can spot in the trees and flying around. The park is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, and the ranger station has a list of what bird species you can see.
  • Go for a walk on the Tropical Hammock Trail to learn about plants native to the area. Another great trail option is the Fort View nature trail which offers incredible views of the 19th-century fort.
  • The waters off the park’s shoreline are some of the best for snorkeling. You can bring your own gear or rent it from the park.

The park is open every day until sundown, but the fort does close earlier in the day. There is an admission fee to enter the park.
