Key West is home to many types of beautiful wildlife. While you can find most of it in the water, one of the places on land to see it in all of its glory is the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, just a quick drive from NYAH Hotel. Go and experience butterfly kisses while learning about the monarch migration, purchasing nature-inspired art at the gift shop, and more.
Of course, you’ll visit the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory to see the “flowers of the sky,” as the center calls them! The glass-enclosed habitat houses 50-60 species of butterflies, as well as plants, trees, waterfalls, and 20 species of exotic birds. Try to spot every type of butterfly in Key West while you wander around the climate-controlled space. Since hundreds of butterflies and birds call the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory their home, you just might be able to! While you’re there, have peace of mind knowing that the butterflies are born in captivity and not captured from the wild. Before you get there, take a sneak peek of the action by watching the live webcam for a few minutes.
In addition to witnessing flutters of butterflies in the enclosed habitat, the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory has a Learning Center read about anatomy, physiology, and the life cycle of the insects. See caterpillars as they prepare for adulthood, and look at the diagram showing the migratory patterns of monarch butterflies. After you’ve finished with both the Learning Center and the Garden, do not skip the Gift Shop. Many visitors in Key West come to the conservatory for the gift shop alone! Here, you can browse original nature-inspired artwork by Sam Trophia, as well as dozens of other unique gifts and items that could serve as souvenirs.
Visiting the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is just one of the many unique things to do in Key West. Cross this experience off your bucket list, and return to NYAH Hotel to regroup for the rest of your day, or spend a few hours soaking in the sun at the pool!
